Overview
Kelowna City Park
Kelowna City Park is the crown jewel of the city’s waterfront, serving as a vibrant recreational hub in the heart of downtown Kelowna. Spanning over 13 hectares along the shores of Okanagan Lake, this historic park creates a seamless connection between the urban core and the natural beauty of the valley. It is the site of the original Aquatic Centre and has a rich legacy as the traditional home of the Kelowna Regatta, dating back to 1906. Today, it remains a primary destination for both locals and tourists, offering extensive green spaces, sandy beaches, and diverse athletic facilities.
Hot Sands Beach and Water Activities
The park features Hot Sands Beach, a long stretch of golden sand that is one of the most popular swimming spots in the region. The waterfront is well-equipped for summer fun:
- Children’s Water Park: A favorite for families, this splash park offers a safe and exciting way for kids to cool off with various spray features.
- Wibit Aqua Park: Located just offshore, this floating obstacle course provides high-energy entertainment (seasonal ticket purchase required).
- Promenade: A wide, paved boardwalk runs the entire length of the beach, connecting to the Waterfront Park and boardwalk system, perfect for walking, jogging, and cycling.
Sports and Recreation
City Park is a center for active living with facilities catering to numerous sports:
- Court Sports: The park houses tennis courts and sand volleyball courts, which are frequently used for casual play and tournaments.
- Skate Park: A modern facility designed for skateboarders and BMX riders of all skill levels.
- Field Sports: Large grassy areas and a sports field accommodate soccer, frisbee, and other group activities.
- Lawn Bowling: The Kelowna Lawn Bowling Club operates well-maintained greens within the park boundaries.
Visitor Amenities
The park is designed for full-day visits, featuring numerous picnic tables, washrooms, and change rooms available during the warmer months. While dogs are generally restricted from the main beach areas to ensure cleanliness, there is a designated dog run in the park where pets can exercise. The park also hosts various food concessions and is the venue for major community events, including the Canada Day celebrations.
