Overview
Hamilton Police Marine Unit
Waterways Policing and Safety
The Hamilton Police Service Marine Unit is based at the edge of Hamilton Harbour on Harbour Front Drive. This specialized unit is responsible for patrolling and securing the waterways within the City of Hamilton’s jurisdiction, which includes the Hamilton Harbour and the western shoreline of Lake Ontario. Their primary mission is to ensure the safety of all boaters, recreational users, and commercial traffic through enforcement, education, and rescue operations.
- Enforcement: Applying the Canada Shipping Act, Criminal Code (impaired boating), and the Liquor Licence Act on the water.
- Search and Rescue: Conducting emergency water rescues, searching for missing persons, and assisting vessels in distress.
- Ice Rescue: Providing specialized rapid response during winter months for ice-related emergencies in the harbour.
- Boater Education: Promoting safe boating practices and conducting vessel safety checks for required equipment.
The unit works closely with the Canadian Coast Guard and other regional marine units. While the facility is an operational base for officers and their vessels, it also serves as a point of contact for marine-related inquiries. 🛥️🌊👮♂️
