Overview
Regional Maximum Security Facility
The ‘Barton Jail’
- Inmate Population: Locally known as the ‘Barton Jail,’ this maximum-security facility houses adult male offenders. It serves as the primary point of entry into the correctional system for the Hamilton and Niagara regions, holding those awaiting trial (remand) and those serving short provincial sentences (typically 60 days or less).
- Judicial Connection: The centre plays a critical role in the justice process, facilitating court appearances for inmates at the John Sopinka Courthouse and other regional courts. It manages high-volume video remand hearings, reducing the need for high-risk prisoner transport.
- Institutional Services: Inmates have access to healthcare, including mental health supports and addiction services. The facility also provides various rehabilitative programs, chaplaincy services, and access to Indigenous Liaison Officers to support spiritual and cultural needs.
Visitation and Procedures
- Strict Visitation Policy: Visiting an inmate requires adherence to strict schedules divided by inmate groups. Visitors must typically schedule appointments in advance. Walk-ins are often not accommodated, and all visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification.
- Security Screening: As a maximum-security institution, all visitors are subject to rigorous screening, including metal detectors and potential canine searches. Personal belongings, including cell phones and bags, are strictly prohibited inside the secure visitation area and must be stored in lockers.
