Overview
Specialized Criminal Investigations
The Hamilton Police Service Investigative Services Division is headquartered at the Central Station on Wilson Street. This division is composed of highly trained plainclothes detectives and specialized officers responsible for handling complex, serious, and protracted criminal investigations that exceed the scope of frontline patrol. The division’s mandate is to solve major crimes, disrupt organized criminal activity, and provide forensic support for the entire service. While the Central Station building is open to the public 24/7 for general reporting, the Investigative Services units typically operate on specific operational schedules and by appointment for interviews.
Specialized Units
- Major Crime Unit: Investigates homicides, suspicious deaths, and attempted murders.
- Victim Services: Specialized support for victims of sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence.
- Vice and Drugs: Targets illegal narcotics trafficking and human trafficking operations.
- Forensic Services: Crime scene examination, DNA collection, and evidence processing.
Contact and Reporting
For emergencies, always dial 9-1-1. To provide information on a case or to speak with a detective, members of the public should call the non-emergency line or Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous. The Central Station lobby offers a safe space for the public to report crimes in person. Visitors to the Investigative Services offices on the upper levels require a security escort and must pass through screening. The division works closely with regional and provincial partners to combat cross-jurisdictional crime.
