Overview
Municipal Court Services and Traffic Violations
Administration of Justice
- Traffic and Bylaw Offences: This office handles the administration of charges under the Highway Traffic Act (such as speeding and careless driving), the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, and City of Hamilton municipal bylaws (including noise, zoning, and property standards). It is the primary point of contact for resolving these non-criminal matters.
- Fine Payments: Residents can pay fines for Provincial Offences notices (tickets) here. The office accepts payments for Red Light Camera tickets and Automated Speed Enforcement charges. Unpaid fines can lead to driver’s license suspension and additional enforcement fees.
- Court Scheduling: Staff assist with requesting trial dates for those wishing to dispute a charge. They also process applications for extensions of time to pay fines and reopenings of convictions, ensuring due process for defendants.
Facility Information
- New Location: Formerly located in the John Sopinka Courthouse, the POA office and courtrooms have moved across the street to 50 Main Street East. This dedicated facility offers improved accessibility and modern courtrooms specifically designed for provincial offence hearings.
- Remote Services: Many services, including fine payments and checking the status of a ticket, are available online through the City of Hamilton’s website or the provincial lookup system, reducing the need for in-person visits.
