Overview
Specialized Crime Analysis
Violent Crime Linkage Analysis System
The Violent Crime Linkage Analysis System (ViCLAS) unit is a specialized section within the RCMP ”B” Division Headquarters at 100 East White Hills Road. This unit does not function as a standard police detachment for reporting day-to-day crimes but rather serves as a critical investigative tool for law enforcement agencies across the province. ViCLAS is a national computer-based system designed to track and link serial violent crimes-such as sexual assaults, homicides, and missing persons cases-by analyzing offender behaviour and modus operandi.
Strategic Headquarters Operations
Located in the Pleasantville area of St. John’s, the headquarters complex houses various specialized support services including Major Crimes, Forensic Identification, and the Operational Communications Centre. The ViCLAS specialists here work behind the scenes, collaborating with investigators from the RCMP and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) to identify patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed in isolated cases. Their work is pivotal in apprehending serial offenders and ensuring public safety through intelligence-led policing.
Security and Access
As a high-security facility handling sensitive intelligence, the B Division Headquarters has strict access controls. It is not open for general public tours. Individuals visiting for administrative purposes, such as fingerprinting or background checks (if offered at this specific counter), must present valid government identification and undergo security screening. The building stands as the command centre for federal policing in Newfoundland and Labrador.
