Overview
The Official Residence of the Lieutenant Governor
Historic Significance
Government House, situated at 50 Military Road, serves as the official residence and workplace of the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, the representative of the Crown in the province. Completed in 1831, this National Historic Site is a stunning example of Palladian architecture, built from red sandstone quarried at nearby Signal Hill. It stands as a symbol of the province’s constitutional history, having housed governors and lieutenant governors for nearly two centuries.
Ceremonial Functions and Awards
As the working office of the Vice-Regal representative, Government House is the venue for numerous state ceremonies. It is here that the Lieutenant Governor grants Royal Assent to legislation, swears in Cabinet ministers, and presents prestigious honours such as the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. The residence also hosts formal receptions for visiting dignitaries, heads of state, and community organizations, playing a central role in the province’s diplomatic and social life.
Public Access and Grounds
The estate features 22 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, which are open to the public for walking and photography. The grounds include heritage gardens and vegetable plots that supply the house’s kitchen. Inside, the public can access the residence through scheduled guided tours, which offer a glimpse into the State Rooms, including the Ballroom, Dining Room, and Drawing Room. These tours provide a unique opportunity to view the province’s collection of art and historical artifacts.
Protocol and Visits
Visitors attending official functions or tours are expected to adhere to established protocol. A standard of dress-typically business attire-is required, and guests must refrain from using cameras inside the residence unless permitted. Security screening is in effect for all visitors entering the building. The facility is fully accessible, ensuring that all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can connect with this living museum of their heritage.
