Government House, situated at 50 Military Road, serves as the official residence and workplace of the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, the representative of the Crown in the province. Completed in 1831, this National Historic Site is a stunning example of Palladian architecture, built from red sandstone quarried at nearby Signal Hill. It stands as a symbol of the province’s constitutional history, having housed governors and lieutenant governors for nearly two centuries.

Ceremonial Functions and Awards

As the working office of the Vice-Regal representative, Government House is the venue for numerous state ceremonies. It is here that the Lieutenant Governor grants Royal Assent to legislation, swears in Cabinet ministers, and presents prestigious honours such as the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. A standard of dress-typically business attire-is required, and guests must refrain from using cameras inside the residence unless permitted.
