St. John’s Regional Probation Office
The Adult Probation office, operating under the division of Corrections and Community Services, is centrally located in downtown St. John’s at 215 Water Street (Atlantic Place). This office is responsible for the supervision of adult offenders who have been placed on probation or are serving conditional sentences in the community. The staff of dedicated Probation Officers works to ensure compliance with court orders while fostering rehabilitation and public safety.
Services and Mandate
Probation Officers at this location conduct risk assessments and develop case management plans tailored to each offender’s needs. They facilitate referrals to treatment programs for substance abuse, anger management, and other behavioural issues. Additionally, the office oversees the Community Service Order program, where offenders perform unpaid work for non-profit organizations as part of their sentence. The goal is to hold offenders accountable while assisting their reintegration into society.
Reporting and Compliance
Individuals subject to supervision must report to this office as directed by their Probation Officer or the court. Failure to report or comply with conditions can result in a breach of probation charge. The office environment is professional, and visitors (clients) are expected to adhere to strict behavioral standards. The location in Atlantic Place ensures it is easily accessible by public transit for those living throughout the metro region.
Victim Services Connection
This division also works closely with Victim Services (located in the same building) to ensure that the concerns of victims are considered, particularly regarding no-contact conditions and safety planning. They prepare Pre-Sentence Reports requested by judges to assist in determining appropriate sentences for convicted individuals.
