Overview
STC Urban Family Services
STC Urban Family Services is a critical division of the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC), located in downtown Saskatoon on 21st Street West. This facility serves as a primary hub for urban Indigenous families, providing culturally sensitive support and government-delegated social services. It operates with a mandate to foster family well-being and reduce the number of children entering the provincial welfare system.
Child Protection and Safety
Uniquely, the STC has delegated legal authority under the provincial Child and Family Services Act. Staff at this location are authorized to assess and investigate reports of child welfare concerns, focusing on keeping families together whenever safely possible. The Child Protection unit works collaboratively with families to build upon their strengths.
Family Support Programs
The centre offers a comprehensive range of prevention and intervention programs designed to support parents and youth:
- KidsFirst: An early childhood development program providing in-home support for vulnerable families with children aged 0-5.
- PALS (Providers of Aboriginal Lifestyle Supports): Offers crisis intervention, advocacy, and mentorship for families involved with the ministry.
- Creative Healing for Urban Members (CHUMs): Holistic healing programs addressing trauma and family dynamics.
Accessing Services
While the focus is on Indigenous families, many STC Urban programs are status-blind and open to the general public. ⚠️ Important: Referrals can be made by community agencies or via self-referral. The office is wheelchair accessible and located near major transit routes.
