Office Mandate
The Office of the City Solicitor functions as the internal law firm for the City of Saskatoon, located within City Hall. It is responsible for ensuring that the municipality’s actions are legally sound and that its interests are protected in all legal matters. This office does not provide legal advice to the general public or private disputes; however, it is the primary point of contact for individuals filing claims for damages alleged to be caused by City operations, such as pothole damage or sewer backups. The team includes solicitors, paralegals, and support staff dedicated to municipal governance. 🏛️📜⚖️
Claims and Prosecutions
Citizens interacting with this office most often do so regarding Bylaw Court matters or the Claims Division. The office manages the process for determining liability in incidents involving city infrastructure. It enforces the Cities Act and various regulatory bylaws including zoning, property maintenance, and traffic violations. While the office represents the City, it maintains a distinct role separate from the political functions of the Mayor and Council, focusing strictly on legal adherence and corporate liability.
