Overview
eHealth Saskatchewan – Regina, SK
eHealth Saskatchewan is a Treasury Board Crown Corporation established in 2011, created to consolidate and modernize the province’s healthcare IT infrastructure. Replacing the former Saskatchewan Health Information Network (SHIN), its mandate is to lead the ‘One Patient: One Record’ strategy. Headquartered in the Cornwall Centre, this organization manages the critical digital backbone that connects patients, physicians, pharmacists, and health regions, ensuring that vital health information is available whenever and wherever it is needed.
Health Registration Services
One of the office’s primary public functions is the administration of Health Service Cards, which provide coverage for medical services.
- Eligibility & Registration: Coverage is available to residents who physically reside in Saskatchewan for at least five months a year. Newcomers from abroad typically become eligible on the first day of the third month after arrival. The office processes applications for new families, updates for address changes, and renewals.
- Identity Verification: To prevent fraud and ensure data integrity, applicants must provide strict proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada, residency, and identity.
Digital Health Initiatives
eHealth Saskatchewan oversees several sophisticated systems that improve care delivery:
- MySaskHealthRecord: Launched in October 2019, this secure portal empowers citizens to access their own health data. It provides a 3-year history of lab results, medical imaging reports, and clinical visit history, as well as a complete provincial immunization record.
- Pharmaceutical Information Program (PIP): A centralized database that tracks medication prescriptions to prevent adverse drug interactions and abuse.
- Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS): Allows X-rays and scans to be viewed digitally by specialists across the province instantly.
Governance and Privacy
Operating under The Health Information Protection Act (HIPA), eHealth is the trustee for a massive volume of sensitive personal health information. The organization enforces rigorous privacy standards and cybersecurity measures to protect citizen data. It works in close partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Ministry of Health to align technology with provincial health policy goals.
