Overview
Municipal Historical Repository
The City of Victoria Archives is the official repository for the records of the City of Victoria’s municipal government, as well as significant private collections that document the history of the city. Located at 8 Centennial Square, within the City Hall complex, the Archives serves as a vital resource for historians, genealogists, students, and property owners. The facility is dedicated to preserving the documentary heritage of Victoria, with records dating back to the city’s incorporation in 1862. It provides a controlled environment for the storage of sensitive materials while offering public access through a dedicated reading room.
Collections and Holdings
The Archives houses a vast and diverse collection of materials that offer insight into the development and social fabric of Victoria. Key holdings include:
- Municipal Records: City Council minutes, bylaws, annual reports, and departmental correspondence that trace the governance of the city.
- Building Plans and Maps: Historic fire insurance plans, engineering maps, and architectural drawings that are essential for heritage home research and land use studies.
- Photographs: An extensive collection of historical images depicting Victoria’s streets, buildings, events, and residents over the decades.
- Private Records: Diaries, letters, and business records donated by local families and organizations that capture the personal side of the city’s history.
- Genealogical Resources: Death and marriage indexes, voters lists, and cemetery records (specifically for Ross Bay Cemetery).
Visiting the Archives
Access to the City of Victoria Archives is by appointment only. The reading room operates on a reduced schedule, typically open mid-week (Tuesday to Thursday). Visitors are required to register upon their first visit of the year and must present valid government-issued identification. Due to the preservation needs of the materials, strict handling rules apply: coats and bags must be stored in provided lockers, and only pencils (no pens) are permitted for note-taking. Staff are available to assist researchers in navigating the finding aids and locating specific documents.
