Overview
Provincial Statistical Agency
BC Planning and Statistics, commonly known as BC Stats, is the central statistical agency for the Government of British Columbia. Located in the Jawl Building on Douglas Street in downtown Victoria, this office operates under the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. Its primary mandate is to provide reliable, unbiased data and analysis to support evidence-based decision-making across the public sector. While it largely functions as an administrative and research hub, it plays a critical role in shaping provincial policies by tracking demographic, social, and economic trends.
Core Data Services
BC Stats is responsible for a wide array of data collection and reporting activities that serve both government and the public. Key areas of focus include:
- Population Estimates: Producing the official population figures for British Columbia’s municipalities and regional districts, which determine funding allocations.
- Economic Analysis: Monitoring indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment rates, and consumer price indices (CPI) to gauge the province’s economic health.
- Survey Research: Conducting large-scale surveys, such as the BC Student Outcomes Survey and employee engagement surveys for the public service.
- Custom Data Services: Offering fee-for-service research and data modeling for other government ministries, crown corporations, and private sector clients.
Office and Access
The office at 1405 Douglas Street is primarily a workspace for statisticians, economists, and researchers. Unlike a Service BC centre, it does not typically offer walk-in counter services for the general public (such as ID renewal or tax payments). Access to the building is controlled, and visitors generally require an appointment. Most of the agency’s data products, reports, and statistical bulletins are made available digitally through their official website. Researchers looking for specific datasets or custom tabulations should contact the agency via email or phone to discuss their needs.
