Victoria Community Corrections – Probation and Bail
General Overview and Mandate
Victoria Community Corrections, located on Courtney Street, is a provincial government office managed by the Corrections Branch of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. This office is responsible for the supervision of adult offenders who have been sentenced to serve their time in the community or who are on bail awaiting trial. The primary goal of the probation officers working here is to enhance public safety by monitoring offender compliance with court orders and supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The office serves the communities of Victoria, Esquimalt, and Oak Bay.
Supervision and Enforcement
Probation officers at this location manage a variety of court orders, including:
- Probation Orders: Supervising individuals placed on probation, ensuring they adhere to conditions such as curfews, counseling attendance, and no-contact orders.
- Conditional Sentence Orders: Monitoring offenders serving a jail sentence in the community (house arrest), which involves strict compliance checks.
- Bail Supervision: Supervising accused persons released on bail to ensure they attend court and follow release conditions.
- Peace Bonds: Monitoring compliance with Section 810 recognizances for individuals who pose a specific safety risk.
Rehabilitation and Support
Beyond enforcement, the office connects clients with essential community resources to address the root causes of criminal behavior. Officers refer individuals to programs for substance abuse treatment, mental health support, anger management, and employment assistance. They also administer Community Work Service programs, where offenders perform court-ordered volunteer work as a form of reparation to the community. Specialized services are available for Indigenous clients, including access to Indigenous Courtworkers and culturally appropriate programming.
