Overview
Island Health Medical Laboratory – Dufferin
The Island Health Medical Laboratory on Dufferin Crescent is a dedicated outpatient collection site located just down the street from the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. This satellite facility is designed to provide efficient community-based diagnostic services, diverting non-urgent testing away from the busy hospital environment. It serves patients who require blood work, urine testing, and other specimen collections ordered by their family physicians, nurse practitioners, or specialists.
Services and Testing
This location is staffed by professional medical laboratory assistants and provides a range of routine and specialized collection services:
- Blood Collection: Routine phlebotomy services for haematology, chemistry, and other blood tests.
- Specimen Drop-off: Patients can drop off urine or stool samples collected at home, provided they have the correct requisition forms and containers.
- ECG Services: Electrocardiogram testing is often available at this site, monitoring heart rhythm and electrical activity.
Appointments and Access
To reduce wait times and ensure safety, Island Health strongly encourages patients to book appointments in advance using the online booking system or by phone. While walk-in service may be available, it is often limited and subject to capacity. Patients must bring a valid printed requisition form from their doctor and their provincial CareCard or BC Services Card to access services.
