Profile
Culturally Safe Legal Support for Indigenous People
The Nanaimo Indigenous Justice Centre (IJC) is a vital resource operated by the BC First Nations Justice Council. Located in the historic Great National Land Building on Church Street, this centre provides free, culturally appropriate legal services to Indigenous people (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) in Nanaimo and surrounding communities. Unlike traditional law offices, the IJC offers a welcoming, holistic environment designed to support clients dealing with the criminal justice and child welfare systems. Their team includes lawyers, outreach workers, and Elders who work together to address not just the legal issues, but the underlying challenges faced by their clients.
Specialized Legal and Social Services
The centre focuses on specific areas of law where Indigenous people are disproportionately affected, providing wrap-around support.
- Criminal Defence: Staff lawyers provide representation for Criminal Defence matters, helping clients navigate the court system while advocating for diversion and restorative justice outcomes where possible.
- Child Protection: They assist families involved with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), fighting to keep families together and ensuring that Indigenous Law and rights are respected in child welfare proceedings.
- Outreach and Support: Beyond legal advice, the centre connects clients with housing, mental health support, and addiction treatment. They also provide access to Elders for spiritual and cultural guidance.
A Hub for Community Healing
The Nanaimo Indigenous Justice Centre is built on the principle of self-determination and the restoration of Indigenous legal traditions. It serves as a safe harbour where clients are treated with dignity and respect. If you identify as Indigenous and are facing criminal charges or child protection concerns, you can find a lawyer here without the barrier of cost. The centre operates on a drop-in or appointment basis and aims to reduce the over-representation of Indigenous people in the justice system. Whether you need to hire an attorney (at no cost) for a court date or simply need someone to talk to about your legal struggles, the IJC is there to help.
