Overview
Nanaimo Correctional Centre
The Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) is a medium-security provincial correctional facility located on Biggs Road, overlooking the shores of Brannen Lake. Operated by BC Corrections (Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General), this institution primarily houses adult male offenders who are serving sentences of less than two years, as well as those awaiting court appearances.
Therapeutic Community
A distinguishing feature of the NCC is the Guthrie Therapeutic Community. This separate, intensive residential substance abuse treatment program is designed to help offenders address the root causes of addiction and criminal behavior. It operates as a distinct community within the prison walls, focusing on peer accountability and rehabilitation.
Programs and Operations
The centre focuses on reducing recidivism through various educational and vocational programs. Inmates can participate in:
- Work Programs: Opportunities in carpentry, forestry, and kitchen services to build employability skills.
- Education: Academic upgrading and cognitive-behavioral courses.
- Agricultural Projects: Engaging in productive activities on the facility’s grounds.
