Profile
Access to Justice for Everyone
In a legal system that can often feel inaccessible to the marginalized, Community Legal Assistance Services For Saskatoon Inner City Inc. (CLASSIC) stands as a vital resource for justice and equity. Located in the heart of the Riversdale neighbourhood on 20th Street West, CLASSIC is a community-based legal clinic dedicated to providing free, professional, and confidential legal services to low-income residents of Saskatoon. As a student-run clinic supervised by experienced practicing lawyers, it combines high-quality legal advocacy with a mandate to address systemic poverty and injustice, particularly affecting Indigenous peoples in the province.
Walk-in Advocacy and Legal Advice
CLASSIC operates through two main streams to assist those who cannot afford private counsel. The Walk-in Advocacy Clinic allows law students, under strict supervision, to provide full representation in over 20 areas of law, including Criminal Defence (summary conviction offences), Landlord and Tenant disputes, and social benefits appeals. For matters requiring less intensive support, the Legal Advice Clinic offers summary legal advice in areas such as Family Law and Civil Litigation. This unique model not only resolves individual legal problems but also trains the next generation of lawyers in the ethics of social justice.
Community-Centered Approach
More than just a law firm, CLASSIC is a community hub. They understand that legal issues are often intertwined with social challenges like housing instability and health care access. By working closely with other community organizations, they offer a holistic approach to client care. Their commitment to Decolonization and recognizing the expertise of their clients in their own lives sets them apart as a compassionate and respectful legal partner.
- Poverty Law: Assistance with welfare, housing, and debts.
- Criminal Defence: Representation for minor criminal charges.
- Tenancy Disputes: Advocacy for renters facing eviction.
- Prison Law: Support for disciplinary matters in correctional centers.
- Human Rights: Fighting discrimination and inequality.
Situated in a street-level office in one of Saskatoon’s most dynamic neighbourhoods, CLASSIC removes the physical and psychological barriers to entering a law office. They are a beacon of hope for those who feel silenced by the legal system.
