Profile
Culturally Safe Legal Support for Indigenous Peoples
The Victoria Indigenous Justice Centre (IJC) is a critical resource located on Yates Street in downtown Victoria. Operated by the BC First Nations Justice Council, the centre provides free, wraparound legal services to Indigenous people-First Nations, Métis, and Inuit-who are dealing with criminal or child protection matters. The IJC is designed to be a safe, welcoming space that addresses the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system by offering support that respects Indigenous laws, traditions, and culture.
Criminal Defence
For Indigenous individuals facing charges, the IJC offers dedicated legal representation. Their Criminal Defence Lawyers understand the unique systemic challenges faced by their clients and are skilled in applying Gladue principles in court. They work to divert clients away from incarceration and towards restorative justice pathways that promote healing and rehabilitation within the community.
Child Protection Advocacy
Keeping families together is a core mission. The centre’s lawyers specialize in child protection, advocating for parents involved with the Ministry of Children and Family Development. They fight to ensure that children remain connected to their culture and kin, providing strong representation in court and support during Ministry meetings.
Holistic Community Support
Legal issues often stem from broader social challenges. The Victoria IJC goes beyond the courtroom by connecting clients with Elders, knowledge keepers, and social services. Outreach workers assist with housing, mental health, and addiction support, ensuring that clients have the stability they need to navigate their legal journey.
- Free Access: No cost for eligible Indigenous clients.
- Culturally Grounded: Guided by Indigenous values and leadership.
- Holistic Approach: integrating legal defence with social well-being.
