Profile
Access to Justice in Downtown Victoria
The Law Centre is a unique service provided by the University of Victoria Faculty of Law. Located just steps from the courthouse in downtown Victoria, it operates as a clinical law program where supervised law students provide free legal assistance to those who cannot afford a lawyer. This institution is a cornerstone of access to justice in the Capital Regional District, serving thousands of people annually. If you qualify financially and have a legal issue but cannot afford to hire a lawyer, The Law Centre may be able to provide the representation and advice you need.
Legal Services Offered
The clinic covers a range of legal areas that most often affect low-income individuals. Services are provided by trained students under the strict supervision of experienced lawyers.
- Criminal Law: Assistance with summary conviction offences and sentencing.
- Family Law: Help with divorce, parenting, support, and protection orders.
- Human Rights: Representing clients in complaints before the BC Human Rights Tribunal.
- Civil Disputes: Assisting with small claims, residential tenancy, and employment insurance appeals.
Education and Outreach
In addition to individual representation, The Law Centre is dedicated to public legal education. They run outreach programs for First Nations communities and inmates. If you need a lawyer urgently and are marginalized or vulnerable, their intake process is designed to assess your eligibility quickly.
A Community Pillar
The Law Centre is more than just a legal clinic; it is a safe harbour for those navigating the justice system alone. While they cannot take every case, they provide referrals and information to everyone who walks through their doors. Their commitment to social justice makes them an invaluable resource in Victoria.
