Overview
SPVQ Headquarters and Operations Center
The Centrale de police de Québec, recently relocated to a state-of-the-art facility on Boulevard Louis-XIV, serves as the primary headquarters for the Service de police de la Ville de Québec (SPVQ). This massive 16,000 square meter complex replaces the former station on Rue de la Maréchaussée, consolidating police operations into a modern, strategic hub. Located at the junction of the boroughs of Charlesbourg and Les Rivières, the new headquarters is designed to optimize response times and improve synergy between various police units, including patrol, investigations, and specialized tactical teams.
24/7 Citizen Services
The station offers a continuously staffed reception desk open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Citizens can visit the Centrale to file criminal complaints (plainte criminelle) for offenses such as theft, assault, or fraud. The facility is equipped to handle sensitive procedures, including the collection of fingerprints (prise d’empreintes) for background checks and visa applications. It also serves as a secure location for the ‘Zone neutre’ (Neutral Zone), a video-monitored area in the parking lot designated for safe internet purchase exchanges or child custody transfers.
Specialized Units and Investigations
As the nerve center of the SPVQ, this building houses the Major Crimes Unit, Cybercrime Division, and the Forensic Identification Module. The consolidation of these departments allows for real-time collaboration on complex investigations. The facility includes secure interview rooms, evidence storage, and a modern detention area for temporary custody. The Traffic Control unit (Contrôle routier) and the K-9 Unit also operate from this base, deploying resources across the city to enforce traffic laws and support high-risk interventions.
Administrative and Judicial Support
Beyond emergency response, the Centrale handles significant administrative functions. It processes background check requests (vérification d’antécédents judiciaires) for employment or volunteering. Citizens can also turn in unwanted firearms or hazardous ammunition for safe disposal through the amnesty program (often by appointment). The station plays a key role in the judicial process, preparing files for the Municipal Court and coordinating with the Crown Prosecutor’s office.
Technology and Community Safety
The new headquarters represents a leap forward in policing technology for Québec City. It features advanced command centers for managing major events and crises. The building’s design prioritizes security while maintaining accessibility for the public. It supports the SPVQ’s community policing model (Police de proximité), serving as a base for officers who engage with local schools, seniors’ residences, and community organizations to prevent crime and build trust.
