Overview
The Fortress of Canada’s Memory
The Library and Archives Canada (LAC) Preservation Centre, located at 550 Boulevard de la Cité in Gatineau, is a world-renowned facility dedicated to the long-term preservation of Canada’s documentary heritage. Opened in 1997, this architectural marvel is designed to protect the nation’s most precious historical records from the elements. Unlike a traditional library where books are borrowed, this site functions as a high-tech sanctuary for millions of items, including books, maps, photographs, and government records. It is the heart of LAC’s preservation operations, ensuring that Canada’s history remains accessible for centuries to come.
State-of-the-Art Vaults
The core of the facility consists of a massive concrete structure housing 48 specialized climate-controlled vaults. These vaults are engineered to maintain precise temperature and humidity levels suitable for different types of media, from paper documents to fragile nitrate films. To protect these vaults from the external environment, the entire concrete block is enclosed within a glass and steel outer shell. This unique ‘building within a building’ design creates an environmental buffer zone, acting as a thermal shield and reducing the energy required to maintain preservation standards. The facility is a global benchmark for archival architecture.
Conservation Laboratories
Above the vaults lies the ‘Village,’ a series of laboratories and work areas where conservators and specialists perform their delicate work. Here, experts repair damaged manuscripts, restore deteriorating photographs, and digitize analog media to preserve the content digitally. The open-concept design of the top floor allows natural light to filter in through the glass roof, creating a functional yet inspiring workspace. The laboratories are equipped with advanced technology for mass deacidification and other preservation treatments, extending the lifespan of Canada’s heritage materials.
Public Access and Tours
While the Preservation Centre is primarily a working facility for LAC staff and not a public reference library (consultations are typically handled at the Ottawa location), it does offer limited public access through guided tours. These tours provide a rare behind-the-scenes look at the vaults and laboratories, explaining the science and care that goes into archiving a nation’s history. Visitors must usually register in advance for these events. The site also serves as a point of contact for the Liaison Centre, assisting other government institutions with record disposition.
Sustainable Heritage
The Gatineau Preservation Campus has expanded with the addition of the new Preservation Storage Facility (PSF), the first net-zero carbon archival facility in the Americas. Together with the original Preservation Centre, this campus represents the Government of Canada’s commitment to both cultural preservation and environmental sustainability. The site sits adjacent to the Rapibus transit corridor, making it a prominent landmark in the Gatineau landscape.
