Criminal Law and Judicial Services
Jurisdiction and Functions
The Ontario Court of Justice located at 70 Simcoe Street is the primary venue for criminal court proceedings in Peterborough County. While the city has two main courthouses, this facility is dedicated to criminal law matters, housing both the Ontario Court of Justice and the criminal operations of the Superior Court of Justice. The court presides over a wide range of cases, from bail hearings and first appearances to complex criminal trials. It plays a critical role in the local justice system, handling charges laid by the Peterborough Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Enforcement and Administration
Beyond the courtrooms, the building serves as the administrative hub for several key justice partners.
- Sheriff’s Office (Enforcement): The Enforcement Office is based here, responsible for executing court orders, including eviction notices and writs of seizure and sale.
- Crown Attorney: The office of the Crown Attorney is located on-site, managing the prosecution of criminal cases.
- Victim/Witness Assistance: The Victim/Witness Assistance Program (VWAP) operates from this location, providing support, information, and referrals to victims and witnesses of violent crimes throughout the court process.
Security and Access
As a high-security facility, strict protocols are enforced to ensure the safety of all participants.
- Screening: All visitors entering the courthouse are subject to airport-style security screening. This includes passing through metal detectors and having bags x-rayed. Weapons, sharp objects, and cameras are strictly prohibited.
- Accessibility: The courthouse is equipped to accommodate persons with disabilities, offering barrier-free access and assistive listening devices in courtrooms upon request to the Accessibility Coordinator.
- Counter Services: The court administration counters are open to the public for filing documents, paying criminal fines, and making inquiries. However, specific hours for counter service may differ from the general building hours, often closing for lunch.
