Overview
Serving Peterborough, Lakefield, and Cavan-Monaghan
The Peterborough Police Service is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of Peterborough, the Village of Lakefield, and the Township of Cavan-Monaghan. Established in 1850, it is one of the oldest police services in Canada, with a rich history of serving the community. The headquarters, located at 500 Water Street, officially opened in 1968 and continues to serve as the central command post for operations. From this facility, the service coordinates a comprehensive range of policing activities, including emergency response, criminal investigations, and community outreach programs designed to maintain public safety and security.
Records and Administrative Services
The headquarters provides essential administrative services to the public, most notably the processing of police record checks. While the service strongly encourages applicants to apply online for Criminal Record Checks and Vulnerable Sector Checks, the station maintains a front desk for inquiries and specific in-person requirements. Citizens can also visit the station to report non-emergency crimes or collisions, although many of these reports can also be filed through their online reporting system. The station serves as a secure location for the community, operating 24 hours a day to assist those in need.
Specialized Units and Operations
The Peterborough Police Service employs over 160 sworn officers and nearly 100 civilian members. The force includes several specialized units based out of the Water Street headquarters or the nearby Lansdowne facility, such as the Emergency Response Team (ERT), the K9 Unit, and the Forensic Identification Unit. These teams provide critical support for complex investigations and high-risk situations. The service is also deeply committed to community policing, with officers actively engaging with local schools, businesses, and mental health partners to address the root causes of crime and disorder.
Community Safety Initiatives
In recent years, the service has implemented modern policing strategies, including the use of body-worn cameras and data-driven patrol deployment. The Water Street facility acts as a ‘Safe Exchange Zone’ for residents conducting online transactions or child custody exchanges, offering a monitored environment to ensure safety. As the service celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2025, it remains dedicated to its mission of professionalism and community partnership.
