Overview
Post-Accident Reporting and Processing
The Peterborough Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) is a specialized facility located within the lobby of the Peterborough Police Service Headquarters on Water Street. Operated in partnership with Accident Support Services International (ASSI), this centre is the designated location for reporting motor vehicle accidents that have occurred within the city limits of Peterborough, the Village of Lakefield, and the Township of Cavan-Monaghan. The establishment of this centre streamlines the collision reporting process, diverting minor accident investigations away from the roadside to a safe, controlled environment. This allows frontline police officers to remain available for urgent calls while ensuring that accident reports are completed accurately and efficiently.
Mandatory Reporting Criteria
Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, drivers are required to report any collision where the combined damage to all vehicles and property exceeds $2,000, or if there is any damage to highway infrastructure (such as guardrails or signs). Instead of waiting for an officer at the scene, involved parties should exchange information and drive their vehicles to the CRC. If a vehicle is not drivable, it must be towed directly to the centre. Upon arrival, staff assist drivers in completing the necessary provincial collision forms, photograph the vehicle damage for insurance and police records, and apply a ‘Damage Reported to Police’ sticker to the vehicle, which prevents future fraudulent repair claims.
When to Call 9-1-1 Instead
It is crucial to understand that the Collision Reporting Centre handles non-emergency cases only. Police must still attend the scene if the collision involves personal injury or death, criminal activity (such as impaired driving or a stolen vehicle), or if a vehicle is transporting dangerous goods. Additionally, if the collision involves a pedestrian or a cyclist, or if public property is significantly damaged, citizens should call police immediately rather than proceeding to the CRC. The centre bridges the gap between law enforcement and the insurance industry, offering a ‘one-stop-shop’ that simplifies the aftermath of a crash for stressful drivers.
