Guardian of Canada’s Documentary Heritage
Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is the federal institution responsible for acquiring, preserving, and providing access to the documentary heritage of the nation. Located in a landmark building at 395 Wellington Street, just west of Parliament Hill, it serves as the continuing memory of the federal government and its institutions. This facility combines the functions of a national library and a national archives, holding a vast collection that includes the Canadian census records, military personnel files, and the legal deposit of books published in Canada. It is a key resource for genealogists, historians, and researchers seeking to understand the country’s past and present 🍁.

The Ottawa facility offers specialized services to assist the public in navigating millions of documents. While some materials must be ordered in advance from off-site preservation centres, the on-site reference rooms provide access to:

- Military Records: Access to service files from the First and Second World Wars (many of which are also available online).
- Published Heritage: A comprehensive collection of Canadian books, periodicals, newspapers, and sound recordings.
- Special Collections: Rare books, literary manuscripts, and the Jacob M. Lowy Collection of Hebraica and Judaica.

Security measures are strict to protect the collection: visitors must check all bags, coats, and umbrellas in provided lockers (a quarter may be required). Only pencils and loose paper are permitted in the consultation rooms; pens are strictly prohibited to prevent damage to documents. Laptops and cameras are generally allowed, but the use of flash is forbidden. Visitors should also be aware that airport-style security screening is in effect at the entrance.
