Overview
Department of National Defence (DND) – Military Police
The Department of National Defence (DND) headquarters at the Major-General George R. Pearkes Building houses key administrative units of the Canadian Armed Forces, including the Military Police CPIC Centre. This unit operates under the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal and serves as the central node for military law enforcement information. It manages the input and retrieval of data from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) system, facilitating background checks, security clearances, and criminal intelligence sharing between military and civilian police agencies.
Identification and Security Services
This location is the primary hub for National Defence Identification Services. It is responsible for issuing the National Defence Identification Card (NDI 20/21) to Regular Force, Reserve Force, and civilian DND employees. The centre ensures that all personnel meet rigorous security standards before receiving accreditation. While the building is a secure facility with restricted public access, these services are essential for the operational readiness and security of Canada’s defence establishment.
- CPIC Administration: Managing criminal record checks and police information for military personnel.
- Security Clearance: Processing background checks for sensitive military roles.
- ID Issuance: Producing and managing secure identification for DND staff.
Facility Access
Located at 101 Colonel By Drive, across from the Rideau Centre, the facility is a high-security zone. Access is strictly controlled and limited to authorized personnel or those with a specific appointment. The centre plays a critical behind-the-scenes role in maintaining the integrity and discipline of the Canadian Armed Forces.
