Overview
Sheriff’s Office (Ottawa Enforcement Office)
The Sheriff’s Office in Ottawa, legally known as the Enforcement Office, is a division of the Ministry of the Attorney General located within the Ottawa Courthouse. Unlike police services, the Sheriff’s primary mandate is the enforcement of civil court orders. This office is the authority responsible for executing writs of seizure and sale, carrying out evictions, and serving specific legal documents that require the power of the court.
Civil Enforcement and Evictions
Landlords and creditors rely on the Sheriff’s Office to enforce orders issued by the Superior Court of Justice or the Landlord and Tenant Board. Once an eviction order is granted, only the Sheriff has the legal authority to physically remove tenants and return possession of the property to the landlord. The office also manages the seizure and auction of assets to satisfy unpaid court judgments.
- Writs of Execution: processing orders to seize property or garnish funds.
- Evictions: Scheduling and executing the removal of unauthorized occupants.
- Court Security: Assisting with the transport and security of prisoners within the judicial complex (in conjunction with police).
Location and Fees
Situated on the second floor of the Ottawa Courthouse at 161 Elgin Street, the Enforcement Office accepts filings for writs and enforcement requests. Fees for services are set by the province and must be paid in advance. The office operates strictly during court hours, and individuals seeking enforcement actions are encouraged to consult with a lawyer to ensuring all paperwork is correctly prepared before visiting.
