Overview
The Hub of Justice for Durham Region
Comprehensive Judicial Services
- Consolidated Operations: Opened in 2010, this state-of-the-art facility consolidated eight separate court locations into one central hub. It houses both the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice, handling criminal, family, civil, and small claims matters for the entire Durham Region.
- Criminal Proceedings: The courthouse features high-security courtrooms and prisoner holding facilities to manage a wide range of criminal cases, from bail hearings and first appearances to complex jury trials for serious indictable offences.
- Family and Civil Courts: Specialized services include the Family Law Information Centre (FLIC) and mediation services. The court adjudicates divorce, child custody, and protection cases, as well as civil litigation and small claims disputes up to $35,000.
Modern Facility and Security
- LEED Gold Design: The building is a landmark of modern civic architecture, being the first government building in Ontario to achieve LEED Gold certification. It features 33 courtrooms, advanced technology for remote testimony, and barrier-free access throughout.
- Strict Security: All visitors must pass through airport-style security screening upon entry, including metal detectors and x-ray baggage scanners. Prohibited items such as cameras, recording devices, and potential weapons are confiscated to ensure the safety of the judiciary and public.
