Overview
Justice Administration for Halton Region
Dual Court Jurisdiction
The Milton Courthouse, located at 491 Steeles Avenue East, serves as the central judicial hub for the Regional Municipality of Halton. It is a multi-jurisdictional facility housing both the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice. This co-location allows the courthouse to handle a vast spectrum of legal matters, ranging from serious criminal prosecutions and complex civil litigation to family law disputes and provincial offences. As the primary courthouse for the region, it services the communities of Milton, Oakville, Burlington, and Halton Hills, playing a pivotal role in upholding the rule of law in Central West Ontario.
Departments and Case Types
The facility is divided into specialized departments to manage its diverse caseload effectively.
- Criminal Division: The Ontario Court of Justice here handles most criminal intake, bail hearings, and youth matters. The Superior Court of Justice presides over serious indictable offences and jury trials. The Crown Attorney’s office is also located on-site to prosecute cases.
- Family and Civil Division: The courthouse addresses family law issues including divorce, child custody, and support payments. The Civil division manages lawsuits, commercial disputes, and bankruptcy proceedings.
- Small Claims Court: A dedicated section handles monetary disputes up to $35,000, providing a more accessible forum for civil justice.
Security and Visiting Protocols
The Milton Courthouse is a high-security government facility. Strict protocols are in place to ensure the safety of judges, staff, and the public.
- Entry Screening: All visitors must pass through airport-style security screening. Metal detectors and baggage x-rays are mandatory. Prohibited items include any potential weapons, sharp objects, and often recording devices.
- Accessibility: The building is fully equipped for accessibility, offering barrier-free courtrooms, elevators, and assistive listening devices upon request. The Accessibility Coordinator can assist those requiring specific accommodations for court proceedings.
- Legal Assistance: The facility often houses Duty Counsel offices (Legal Aid Ontario) to assist unrepresented litigants in criminal and family matters.
