Overview
Maximum Security Adult Male Facility
The Maplehurst Correctional Complex is one of Ontario’s largest and most technologically advanced provincial correctional facilities. Commonly referred to as a ‘Superjail’, it is located in Milton and serves as a combined remand centre and correctional institute for adult males. While the original facility was established in 1974, the site underwent a massive redevelopment and modernization project, reopening in 2001 with a pod-style design that emphasizes direct supervision and improved security management. It acts as a central hub for the prisoner transportation system in Southern Ontario, processing transfers between courts and other institutions.
Facility Structure and Capacity
Maplehurst has a capacity to house approximately 1,500 inmates. The population consists primarily of individuals on remand (awaiting trial or bail) and those serving provincial sentences of two years less a day. The facility is divided into self-contained living units or ‘pods’, which allows for better classification and segregation of different offender populations. This modern layout reduces tension and enhances safety for both correctional officers and inmates compared to traditional linear jail designs.
Visitation and Procedures
Visiting an inmate at Maplehurst requires adherence to strict protocols. Unlike some other facilities, Maplehurst generally operates on a first-come, first-served basis for general population visits, though calling ahead is strongly recommended to check for lockdowns or cancellations. Visits are typically non-contact (behind glass) or via video terminals. Visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification and pass through metal detectors. Personal belongings, including mobile phones and bags, are not permitted inside the visitation area.
Programs and Services
Despite being a high-security environment, the complex offers various programs aimed at rehabilitation and education. Inmates have access to academic upgrading, religious services, and substance abuse support groups. The facility also includes a large healthcare unit to manage the medical needs of the inmate population. As a key component of the Ministry of the Solicitor General’s operations, Maplehurst plays a pivotal role in maintaining public safety while managing a high-volume, transient inmate population.
- Remand Services: Holding facility for accused individuals pending court outcomes.
- Intermittent Sentences: Processing for offenders serving weekend sentences.
