Overview
Provincial Correctional Institution for Women
The Vanier Centre for Women is a medium and maximum-security correctional facility located in Milton, Ontario. Opened in 2003, this institution replaced the former Vanier Centre in Brampton and the Prison for Women (P4W) in Kingston, consolidating provincial female correctional services into a modern complex. It shares the same campus as the Maplehurst Correctional Complex but operates as a distinct entity with its own administration and programming.
Inmate Population and Programs
The facility houses female offenders who are remanded in custody awaiting trial or sentencing, as well as those serving sentences of less than two years. With a capacity of approximately 333 inmates, it offers a variety of rehabilitative programs designed to address the unique needs of women in conflict with the law. These include substance abuse counselling, educational courses, life skills training, and employment readiness workshops. The centre also provides specialized healthcare services, including mental health support, acknowledging the complex trauma often experienced by its population.
Security and Visiting Protocols
Security at the Vanier Centre is rigorous to ensure the safety of both staff and inmates. Visitors must strictly adhere to the dress code (modest attire required) and are subject to search and security screening upon entry. Personal items such as cell phones, cameras, and bags are prohibited inside the secure area. Unlike some other facilities, visits are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance by calling the institution. Visitors are typically required to arrive early to complete necessary paperwork and identity verification.
Role in the Justice System
As the primary provincial facility for women in Southern Ontario, the Vanier Centre plays a critical role in the administration of justice. It serves not only as a detention centre but also as a hub for discharge planning, helping women reintegrate into society upon their release. The facility works in partnership with various community organizations to provide transitional support and reduce recidivism.
- Remand Centre: Housing for women awaiting court appearances.
- Rehabilitation: Access to social workers, chaplains, and Indigenous program coordinators.
- Healthcare: On-site medical and dental services for inmates.
