Overview
By-law Compliance and Enforcement
The City of London Municipal Law Enforcement Services (MLE), located at 520 Wellington Street, is the division responsible for upholding the city’s community standards through the enforcement of municipal by-laws. This office handles a wide array of regulatory matters that affect the quality of life for London residents, ranging from noise complaints and property maintenance to animal control and business licensing. Municipal Law Enforcement Officers (MLEOs) are authorized to investigate complaints, issue orders for compliance, and lay charges when necessary to ensure public safety and neighborhood livability.
Areas of Responsibility
- Property Standards: Ensuring buildings and yards are maintained, free of debris, and structurally sound.
- Animal Control: Licensing of pets, responding to stray animal reports, and enforcing leash laws.
- Noise Control: Investigating excessive noise disturbances from residences, construction, or vehicles.
- Business Licensing: Regulating short-term accommodations, taxi services, and other licensed business activities.
Service Access
The office at Wellington Street is open to the public for general inquiries, payment of fees, and filing of formal complaints. However, the City encourages residents to use the online Service London portal or email for faster reporting of by-law violations. While officers patrol the city and respond to calls, administrative services are strictly available during business hours. This division works closely with the London Police Service and the Middlesex-London Health Unit on overlapping issues of public concern.
