Provincial Correctional Facility
The Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre is a maximum-security provincial correctional facility located at 711 Exeter Road in the southern industrial area of London, Ontario. Operated by the Ministry of the Solicitor General, this facility serves as the primary point of entry into the correctional system for adult males in Southwestern Ontario. It houses offenders who are on remand (awaiting trial or sentencing), as well as those serving custodial sentences of two years less a day. The centre has a capacity of approximately 450 inmates and is known for its high-security environment.
Visitation and Operations
- Visitation Policy: Visits are strictly controlled and must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. The facility generally allows two visits per week per inmate, with specific time slots allocated based on the unit.
- Security Screening: All visitors are subject to rigorous security checks, including metal detection and potential searches. Personal belongings are largely prohibited inside the secure visiting area.
- Inmate Support: The facility provides basic healthcare, programming, and access to legal counsel for inmates. Family members can deposit funds into an inmate’s trust account for canteen purchases via specific kiosks or online services.
Important Visitor Information
Visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification. It is crucial to arrive early for appointments to clear security, as late arrivals may be denied entry. The facility enforces a strict dress code and code of conduct; any disruptive behavior can result in the termination of the visit and potential bans.
