Overview
Military Reserve and Recruitment Centre
The Colonel J.A. McIntosh, DSO, ED Armoury is a prominent federal government facility and a designated heritage building located in downtown Cambridge (Galt). It serves as one of the two headquarters for The Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada (RHFC), a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army. Built between 1914 and 1915, this fortress-like structure acts as a vital link between the Canadian Armed Forces and the local community. It is not just a training ground but a functioning government office where administration, logistics, and recruitment activities take place. The facility supports the 31 Canadian Brigade Group and prepares citizen-soldiers to augment the Regular Force in domestic and international operations.
Regiment History and Role
The RHFC has a storied lineage dating back to 1866, with roots in the Fenian Raids and significant contributions to both World Wars and the mission in Afghanistan. The Armoury itself is named after Colonel John A. McIntosh, a distinguished local soldier. Inside, the regiment conducts weekly training nights (typically Thursdays) focusing on infantry tactics, weapons handling, and fieldcraft. The building houses the Officers’ Mess, Junior Ranks’ Mess, and administrative offices that manage the career progression of reservists. The regiment is deeply integrated into the fabric of Waterloo Region, participating in ceremonial duties, parades, and Remembrance Day observances.
Recruitment and Public Engagement
For the general public, the Armoury is the primary point of contact for joining the Army Reserve in the Cambridge area. Recruiters are available to explain the benefits of service, including full-time summer employment, tuition reimbursement programs for students, and competitive part-time pay. The facility is equipped to handle the initial stages of the application process, answering questions about fitness standards and trade options such as Infantry Soldier, Human Resources Administrator, or Musician. While the armoury is a secure military installation, it occasionally opens its doors for events like ‘Doors Open Waterloo Region’, allowing citizens to tour the historic drill hall and view regimental museum displays.
