DriveTest Centre Overview
Driver Examination Services
The DriveTest Centre Cambridge is a privately operated facility contracted by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) to conduct driver examinations. Managed by Serco Canada Inc., this centre is the primary location for residents of Cambridge and the Region of Waterloo to obtain and upgrade their driver’s licenses. The facility provides a comprehensive range of testing services, including knowledge tests (written exams) for G1 (car) and M1 (motorcycle) learner’s permits. These tests evaluate an applicant’s understanding of road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices. No appointment is typically required for written tests, which are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, though applicants must arrive at least one hour before closing.
For practical assessments, the centre administers road tests for various license classes, primarily Class G2 and Class G (passenger vehicles), as well as Class M2 and M (motorcycles). These tests assess a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely in real-world traffic conditions. Road tests must be booked in advance, either online or by phone. The centre also handles driver’s license exchanges for new residents moving from other provinces or countries with reciprocal agreements, ensuring their driving credentials are valid in Ontario.
Procedural Requirements and Policies
Visitors to the DriveTest Centre must adhere to strict procedural guidelines. Applicants are required to present valid, original identification documents that show their legal name, date of birth, and signature. For road tests, the vehicle provided by the applicant must be in good working order; examiners will perform a pre-trip inspection to check indicators, brake lights, tires, and the horn. If the vehicle is deemed unsafe, the test will be cancelled. Vision screening is mandatory for all new applicants and certain renewals to ensure they meet the minimum sight standards for safe driving.
Strict security measures are in place to prevent fraud and cheating. The use of electronic devices, such as cell phones or cameras, is strictly prohibited inside the examination rooms and during road tests. Applicants found violating these rules may face immediate disqualification. The centre also enforces a zero-tolerance policy for verbal abuse or harassment of staff.
Location and Accessibility
Located on Elgin Street North, the facility is situated in a commercial area with accessible parking. It serves a high volume of applicants, so wait times can vary significantly, especially during peak periods like summer months and school holidays. The centre is designed to be wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all members of the public can access essential government services. 🚗📝🛑🇨🇦
