Sheriff’s Office and Enforcement Services
The Ontario Enforcement Office in Brantford, often referred to as the Sheriff’s Office, is a critical component of the provincial justice system. Located within the Superior Court of Justice building at 70 Wellington Street, this office operates under the Ministry of the Attorney General. Its primary mandate is to enforce the civil orders and judgments issued by the courts. The Enforcement Office plays a neutral but authoritative role in executing legal writs, ensuring that the decisions made by judges regarding property and debts are carried out in accordance with the law.
Key Enforcement Functions
The Sheriff and enforcement officers manage a variety of sensitive and legally complex tasks:
- Evictions: The office is responsible for enforcing orders to vacate (evictions) issued by the Landlord and Tenant Board, physically restoring possession of a property to the landlord when necessary.
- Seizure and Sale: Officers execute Writs of Seizure and Sale, which may involve taking possession of a debtor’s personal property or land to satisfy a court judgment.
- Garnishments: The office processes garnishment orders to redirect wages or bank funds to creditors.
- Service of Documents: Enforcement officers serve specialized legal documents that initiate or continue legal proceedings.
- Jury Management: The Sheriff is also responsible for summoning and managing jury panels for criminal and civil trials held at the courthouse.
Operational Details and Access
Access to the Enforcement Office is subject to the strict security protocols of the courthouse, including mandatory security screening upon entry. Visitors must pass through metal detectors and have bags inspected. While the building is open during standard business hours, counter services for filing enforcement requests are strictly limited to specific windows (typically 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM). It is highly recommended to call ahead or consult with legal counsel before visiting, as the procedures for filing writs are technical and require precise documentation. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible. 👮♂️⚖️
