Overview
Brantford Collision Reporting Centre
The Brantford Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) is a specialized facility located within the Brantford Police Service headquarters at 344 Elgin Street. Operated in partnership with Accident Support Services International Ltd. (ASSI), this centre serves as the official point for reporting motor vehicle accidents in the City of Brantford that meet specific criteria. Its primary function is to streamline the reporting process for minor collisions, alleviating the demand on frontline police officers while ensuring that accurate data is collected for insurance and statistical purposes.
Mandatory Reporting Requirements
Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, drivers involved in a collision must report the incident to the police if the combined damage to all vehicles and property exceeds $5,000 (effective January 2025), if there are any injuries, or if there is damage to highway property. The CRC handles these reports when police attendance at the scene is not required. Drivers should not attend the CRC if the collision involves criminal activity (such as impaired driving), serious injuries, or if a vehicle is transporting dangerous goods; in these cases, 9-1-1 should be called immediately.
Reporting Process
Upon arrival at the CRC, drivers must have their vehicle present (unless it was towed directly to the impound) and provide valid documentation, including a driver’s licence, vehicle ownership, and insurance slip. Staff at the centre will photograph the vehicle damage and apply a ”Reported to Police” sticker, which is often required by auto repair shops before commencing work. The centre also offers kiosks where drivers can input their collision details. The service facilitates a ”one-stop” experience where the report is finalized, and insurance companies can be notified electronically if the driver chooses.
Operational Details
The facility operates during specific business hours to accommodate the public. If a vehicle is not drivable and requires a tow, it must be towed directly to the CRC during operating hours. If the collision occurs outside of business hours, the vehicle can be towed to a safe location (such as the owner’s residence), and the driver has 48 hours to report the incident at the centre. There is no fee for the police report itself, as the program is funded by participating insurance companies.
