Overview
Regional Public Health: Grand Erie
Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH), headquartered on Terrace Hill Street in Brantford, is the official public health agency serving the City of Brantford, the County of Brant, Haldimand County, and Norfolk County. Established on January 1, 2025, following the amalgamation of the former Brant County Health Unit and the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, this organization operates under the legislative authority of the Ontario Health Protection and Promotion Act. As a regional government body, GEPH is governed by a Board of Health composed of municipal representatives and provincial appointees, ensuring local accountability. The agency’s primary mandate is to protect and promote the health of the population through rigorous disease prevention programs, health inspections, and community education initiatives. It serves as the central authority for enforcing public health standards, managing outbreaks of infectious diseases, and delivering provincially funded health programs to over 250,000 residents across the Grand Erie region.
Immunization and Disease Control
One of the core functions of Grand Erie Public Health is the management of the region’s immunization records and vaccination programs. The agency enforces the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), requiring all students attending school in the region to have valid proof of vaccination against designated diseases. Parents and guardians use the GEPH online portal or visit the office to update these records and avoid school suspensions. The facility runs regular immunization clinics for routine childhood vaccines, influenza, and COVID-19. Beyond vaccinations, the Infectious Disease team monitors and investigates reportable diseases, providing case management and contact tracing to prevent community spread. The agency also distributes publicly funded vaccines to local physicians and pharmacies, ensuring a coordinated supply chain.
Environmental Health and Inspections
The Environmental Health division at GEPH is responsible for ensuring the safety of the public in shared spaces. Public Health Inspectors from this office conduct mandatory inspections of food premises (restaurants, grocery stores), personal service settings (salons, tattoo parlours), and recreational water facilities (public pools, spas). These inspections ensure compliance with provincial regulations, and the results are often posted publicly (e.g., DineSafe) to inform consumer choices. The agency also provides water testing services for residents relying on private wells; sample bottles can be picked up and dropped off at the Terrace Hill location for bacteriological testing. Furthermore, the unit responds to health hazards in the community, such as adverse air quality events, rabies exposures from animal bites, and complaints regarding sanitation.
Clinical and Family Services
Grand Erie Public Health offers direct clinical services to vulnerable populations. The Sexual Health Clinic provides confidential testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as access to low-cost birth control and harm reduction supplies. The dental program administers Healthy Smiles Ontario for eligible children and the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program, providing essential dental care to low-income residents who lack private insurance. Additionally, the Healthy Growth and Development team supports young families through prenatal classes, breastfeeding clinics, and the Healthy Babies Healthy Children home visiting program. Residents can access these services by appointment, often requiring an initial screening to determine eligibility.
