Overview
Brantford DriveTest Centre: Licensing and Examinations
The Brantford DriveTest Centre is the official facility for driver examination services in the City of Brantford and the surrounding Brant County. While often confused with ServiceOntario, this centre has a distinct mandate. It is operated by Serco Canada Inc., a private sector organization licensed by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO). Its primary function is to administer the knowledge and road tests required to obtain various classes of driver’s licences, whereas ServiceOntario handles vehicle registration and the renewal of existing health cards and licences (though some licence exchanges occur here).
Testing Services and License Classes
This facility offers a comprehensive range of examinations for new and experienced drivers:
- Passenger Vehicles (Class G): The centre conducts the written knowledge test for the G1 licence (available on a walk-in basis) and scheduled road tests for G2 (city driving) and G (highway driving) licences.
- Motorcycles (Class M): Aspiring riders can take their M1 written test here. Road tests for M2 and M classes are also conducted seasonally, weather permitting.
- Commercial Licences: The Brantford location is equipped to test for heavy truck and bus licences (Classes A, B, C, D, E, F) and the Z endorsement (Air Brakes).
- Licence Exchanges: New residents from other provinces or countries with reciprocal agreements can exchange their driver’s licence here, subject to document verification.
Operational Procedures and Requirements
To ensure a smooth visit, applicants must adhere to strict procedural guidelines. Identification is mandatory for all services; typically, a valid passport, citizenship card, or birth certificate is required. For road tests, applicants must provide their own vehicle (except for certain commercial tests where a rental may be arranged elsewhere), and it must pass a pre-trip safety inspection by the examiner (checking lights, signals, horn, and tires). Passengers and pets are strictly prohibited in the vehicle during the test, with the exception of service animals or registered interpreters.
Facility and Accessibility
Located in a commercial plaza on North Park Street, the centre is designed to be fully accessible. It features barrier-free access, including automatic doors and accessible washrooms. The facility uses a ticket-based queuing system for inside services (knowledge tests, document processing). The parking lot provides ample space for applicants, but candidates are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before their scheduled road test to complete the check-in process at the self-serve kiosks or counters.
Payment and Fees
Payment for services must be made at the time of the transaction. The centre accepts cash, debit cards, and major credit cards (VISA, MasterCard). Personal cheques are generally not accepted, though certified cheques or money orders made payable to ”Serco Canada Inc.” are valid. It is important to note that road test fees are often prepaid at the time of booking (online or by phone) to secure the appointment.
