Overview
Metro Vancouver Transit Police
The Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) is the only dedicated transit police service in Canada, a unique multi-jurisdictional law enforcement agency headquartered in New Westminster. Established as a designated policing unit in 2005, the Transit Police are responsible for preserving the peace, preventing crime, and enforcing the law within the vast transit system of Metro Vancouver. Their jurisdiction spans 21 municipalities and one First Nation, covering a service area of over 1,800 square kilometres. The headquarters, located at Nelson’s Court near the Sapperton SkyTrain station, serves as the administrative and operational hub for the force.
Mandate and Jurisdiction
Unlike traditional municipal police forces that are bound by city limits, Transit Police officers have the authority of provincial constables. This grants them full police powers on and off duty throughout British Columbia. Their primary focus, however, is the safety and security of the hundreds of thousands of passengers and employees who use the TransLink network daily. This includes:
- SkyTrain and West Coast Express: Patrolling the Expo, Millennium, and Canada Lines, as well as the commuter rail service.
- Bus Network: Responding to incidents on the extensive Coast Mountain Bus Company fleet and at major bus loops.
- SeaBus: Ensuring safety on the passenger ferry service connecting Vancouver and North Vancouver.
Specialized Units and Community Safety
The Transit Police employ a community-based policing model designed to address the unique challenges of a mobile population. Key units include:
- Explosive Detection Dog Team: K9 units specially trained to detect explosives, patrolling stations and trains to ensure infrastructure security.
- Community Engagement Team: Officers who work to build relationships with vulnerable populations, connecting people in crisis with social services rather than relying solely on enforcement.
- Targeted Mobile Enforcement Team: A plainclothes unit focused on disrupting criminal activity and identifying prolific offenders within the transit system.
Reporting and Communication
The MVTP encourages active public participation in safety through their ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign. They operate a discrete text reporting service (Text 87-77-77), allowing passengers to report non-emergency issues like harassment or disorder silently and in real-time. This headquarters location handles administrative functions, professional standards inquiries, and Freedom of Information requests, supporting the frontline officers who are deployed across the region.
