Overview
New Westminster City Hall
New Westminster City Hall, located at 511 Royal Avenue, stands as the administrative heart of the “Royal City,” British Columbia’s first capital. This facility serves as the central hub for municipal governance, housing the Mayor and Council chambers as well as key city departments including Finance, Engineering, and Planning. Residents visit City Hall to access a wide array of local services, from paying property taxes and utilities to applying for building permits and business licences. The building is situated centrally, reflecting the city’s rich history while facilitating modern civic operations and community engagement.
Finance and Licensing Services
The Finance Department at City Hall is the primary point of contact for financial transactions with the city. Homeowners and businesses can pay property taxes and utility bills (water, sewer, solid waste) at the main counters. The facility also manages the issuance and renewal of business licences and dog licences. For those receiving parking violations, parking tickets can be disputed or paid here. The city promotes the use of its “MyCity” online portal, but in-person support remains a vital service for many residents.
Planning and Development
City Hall is the destination for property owners and developers undertaking construction projects. The Planning and Building department provides guidance on zoning bylaws, building permits, and development applications. Staff are available to assist with plumbing and electrical permit inquiries and to schedule inspections. This division ensures that all development aligns with the city’s Official Community Plan and safety standards. Additionally, the Legislative Services department handles requests for information (FOI) and coordinates council meetings, which are open to the public.
