Profile
Free Legal Support for London’s Community
Neighbourhood Legal Services (London & Middlesex) is a non-profit community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. Established in 1986, the clinic provides essential legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in London and Middlesex County. Their mission is to increase access to justice by offering free legal advice and representation in areas of law that affect the basic needs of life, such as housing and income maintenance. Staffed by a dedicated team of lawyers and legal workers, the clinic works to empower clients and address systemic issues through law reform and community education.
Housing and Tenant Rights
One of the clinic’s primary areas of practice is housing law. As advocates for tenants, they provide critical support for those facing eviction, maintenance issues, or disputes with landlords. Through their Tenant Duty Counsel program, they offer summary advice to tenants appearing before the Landlord and Tenant Board. Their team of Landlord and Tenant Lawyers and paralegals fights to keep people housed and ensures that tenants’ rights are respected under the Residential Tenancies Act.
Income Security and Social Assistance
Neighbourhood Legal Services assists clients who are having difficulties with government income support programs. They represent individuals in appeals regarding Ontario Works (OW), the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), and Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D) benefits. If you have been denied benefits or are facing a suspension, their knowledgeable staff can help you navigate the complex tribunal system to secure the financial support you are entitled to.
Employment and Human Rights
The clinic also provides representation in matters related to Employment and Labour Law. They assist workers who have been wrongfully dismissed or who are facing violations of employment standards. Additionally, they advocate for clients in cases involving Human Rights discrimination and harassment. By focusing on these key areas, Neighbourhood Legal Services plays a vital role in protecting the dignity and livelihoods of the community’s most vulnerable members.
