Overview
Palais de justice de Montréal
The Palais de justice de Montréal serves as the central hub for judicial activities in the judicial district of Montreal, playing a pivotal role in the Quebec justice system. Located in the historic Old Montreal district, this government institution houses the Superior Court of Quebec (Civil, Family, and Criminal Divisions) and the Court of Quebec (Civil, Criminal and Penal, and Youth Divisions), handling a vast volume of legal proceedings daily.
Historical Significance and Architecture
Inaugurated in 1971, the current courthouse is a striking example of brutalist International Style architecture, designed by the firm David, Barott and Boulva. Standing as a black metal and granite monolith near Champ-de-Mars, it replaced earlier courthouses to consolidate scattered judicial services. For over 50 years, it has functioned as the primary seat of justice for the metropolis, witnessing some of the most high-profile legal battles in Canadian history.

- Civil Division: Manages disputes involving contracts, liability, and damages, including Small Claims Court (Petites créances) administration.
- Family Law: Processes divorce, child custody, alimony, and adoption cases (Superior Court).

Visit Procedures and Security
Access to the Montreal Courthouse is strictly controlled. All visitors must pass through airport-style security screening at the main entrances. Prohibited items include weapons, sharp objects, and cameras (unless authorized). Cell phones must be silenced and are generally restricted in courtrooms. Visitors should check the electronic docket screens (rôles d’audience) in the main lobby to locate their specific courtroom. Legal attire (business casual) is strongly recommended for all court appearances.
Administration and Jurisdiction
Operated by the Ministère de la Justice du Québec, the courthouse ensures the administration of justice at the provincial level. It coordinates closely with the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales (DPCP), legal aid services, and prisoner transport services to maintain the rule of law within the community.
