Overview
Historic Provincial Correctional Facility
The Établissement de détention de Montréal, widely known as the Bordeaux Prison, is the largest provincial correctional facility in Quebec. Located on Gouin Boulevard West in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, this maximum-security institution operates under the authority of the Ministère de la Sécurité publique du Québec. Unlike federal penitentiaries, Bordeaux primarily houses male offenders who have been sentenced to terms of imprisonment of less than two years, as well as defendants awaiting trial (remand). Its distinctive architectural structure, featuring a central dome and radiating wings, reflects the panopticon style common in early 20th-century prison design.
Custody and Judicial Processing
As a key node in the provincial justice system, the Montreal Detention Centre manages a high volume of admissions and releases daily. Its core functions include:
- Remand Custody: Holding individuals accused of crimes who have been denied bail while they await their court dates.
- Short-Term Sentences: Housing offenders serving provincial sentences (strictly under two years minus one day).
- Evaluation and Transfer: acting as a transit point where inmates are assessed before being transferred to other provincial facilities or federal penitentiaries if their sentences exceed two years.
Historical Significance
Built between 1908 and 1912 by the renowned architect Jean-Omer Marchand, the prison replaced the overcrowded Pied-du-Courant prison. For decades, it was the site of capital punishment in Quebec until the abolition of the death penalty. Today, it stands as a heritage landmark, although it faces modern challenges regarding capacity and infrastructure. The facility plays a somber but essential role in the history of Montreal’s legal enforcement, having held numerous high-profile figures throughout the 20th century.
Visiting and Security Regulations
Visiting an inmate at Bordeaux is a strictly regulated process designed to ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and inmates. The facility enforces a rigorous security protocol:
- Appointment System: Visits are not drop-in; they must be scheduled in advance by the inmate or approved visitors.
- Identification: Valid government-issued photo ID is mandatory for all visitors.
- Screening: All visitors undergo metal detection and search procedures. Personal belongings, including cellphones and bags, are prohibited inside the visiting area.
- Dress Code: A conservative dress code is strictly enforced; inappropriate attire may result in the denial of entry.
