Overview
Centre jeunesse de Laval (Protection de la jeunesse)
The Centre jeunesse de Laval, also known as the Centre de protection de l’enfance et de la jeunesse, is a critical institution dedicated to the welfare of minors in the Laval region. Operating under the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) de Laval, this facility acts as the central headquarters for the Director of Youth Protection (DYP). It is mandated to enforce the Youth Protection Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act, ensuring the safety and development of vulnerable children and adolescents.
Youth Protection Services (DPJ)
The core function of this center is to receive and assess reports (signalements) regarding children whose security or development may be compromised due to neglect, abuse, or behavioral difficulties. The Direction de la protection de la jeunesse (DPJ) operates a 24/7 emergency response system here. Specialized social workers evaluate incoming alerts to determine if immediate intervention or court measures are necessary to protect the child.
Young Offenders and Rehabilitation
In addition to protection, the Centre jeunesse administers services for adolescents subject to the Youth Criminal Justice Act (LSJPA). This includes psychosocial assessments, supervision of probation orders, and rehabilitation programs designed to reintegrate young offenders into society while holding them accountable. The center coordinates closely with the Youth Division of the Court of Quebec and local police services.
Family and Psychosocial Support
- Crisis Intervention: Rapid response teams to de-escalate family conflicts and provide immediate support.
- Adoption and Biological History: Management of international and local adoption files, as well as background searches for adoptees.
- Mediation: Services to resolve disputes between parents and teens or to facilitate family reunification.
- Aire Ouverte: Often associated with this location, providing a drop-in service for youth aged 12–25 seeking mental health or sexual health advice.
Access and Confidentiality
Due to the sensitive nature of its work, the Centre jeunesse maintains strict privacy and security protocols. While the emergency reporting line is always open, administrative services at 308 Boulevard Cartier Ouest generally require an appointment. Visitors may be subject to identity verification. The facility is designed to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for families in crisis.
