- Family History: The archives maintain over 3,000 files on early settler families of Whitby, including genealogical charts and correspondence. Researchers can access census records, land abstracts, and assessment rolls to trace their ancestry within the region.
- Historical Media: The collection houses extensive microfilm holdings of local newspapers such as the Whitby Gazette and Whitby This Week. Additionally, a digitized photograph collection offers a visual history of the town’s growth, architecture, and community events over the centuries.
- Municipal Records: As the repository for the Town of Whitby, the archives preserve official documents including council minutes, by-laws, and voters’ lists dating back to the 19th century, providing essential context for understanding the development of the municipality.
Access and Services
- Location: Housed on the second floor of the Whitby Public Library (Central Branch), the archives offer a quiet environment for research. While some resources are available for drop-in viewing, contacting the archivist in advance is highly recommended to ensure specific materials are retrieved from storage.
- Digital Resources: Through the Archeion database and the library’s online portals, the public can search finding aids and view selected digital exhibits remotely, making local history accessible to those unable to visit in person.
