Overview
Durham Region Health Department
The Durham Region Health Department is headquartered within the Regional Municipality of Durham’s main administrative complex at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby. As the upper-tier level of government, the Region of Durham is responsible for public health services across all eight local municipalities, including Whitby, Oshawa, and Pickering. This facility houses the administrative leadership and core program teams dedicated to promoting and protecting the health of the region’s residents through disease prevention, health promotion, and health protection initiatives.
Public Health Services
The Health Department provides a broad spectrum of services mandated by the province:
- Immunization Clinics: While many clinics are held in the community, the headquarters coordinates the region’s vaccination strategy for schools and the general public.
- Health Inspections: Public Health Inspectors working from this base conduct inspections of food premises (restaurants), public pools, and personal service settings (salons/spas) to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Results are posted on the ‘DineSafe Durham’ portal.
- Family Health: Services include the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program, breastfeeding support, and sexual health clinics (Note: Specific clinic hours and locations vary and may not always be at Rossland Road).
Regional Government Headquarters
Beyond health services, 605 Rossland Road East serves as the seat of the Regional Council and the administrative centre for other regional departments, including Social Services, Works (waste management, water supply), and Planning. The building features the Council Chambers where regional policies are debated. Visitors attending for health services should check if their appointment is at this HQ building or at one of the specialized clinics located elsewhere in the region.
