Overview
Roy McMurtry Youth Centre (RMYC)
Secure Youth Custody Facility
The Roy McMurtry Youth Centre, located at 8500 McLaughlin Road South in Brampton, is a specialized secure custody and detention facility for male youth aged 12 to 17 who are in conflict with the law. Managed by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, this facility serves the Greater Toronto Area and is designed to balance secure confinement with rehabilitation. Opened in 2009, the centre utilizes a ‘relationship custody’ model, where staff actively engage with youth to foster positive behavioral changes rather than relying solely on static security measures. The campus-style layout includes residential cottages, a multi-faith worship centre, and on-site educational facilities.
Rehabilitation and Education
- Education: Operates an on-site school in partnership with the Peel District School Board, allowing residents to earn high school credits and learn trade skills.
- Programs: Offers anger management, substance abuse counseling, and cognitive-behavioral therapy tailored to youth needs.
- Healthcare: Provides access to medical, dental, and mental health services within the secure perimeter.
- Spiritual Care: Accommodates diverse religious and spiritual practices through its multi-faith centre and chaplaincy services.
Visitor and Security Protocols
As a maximum-security youth facility, strict protocols are enforced to ensure the safety of staff and residents. All visits must be scheduled in advance, and visitors are subject to rigorous security screening, including metal detectors. Valid government-issued photo identification is mandatory for entry. Personal items such as cell phones, cameras, and bags are strictly prohibited inside the secure zone and must be left in vehicles or designated lockers. The facility aims to maintain a respectful environment, and a modest dress code is generally expected for all visitors.
