Overview
Superior Court of Justice – Family Court Branch
The Barrie Courthouse, located at 119 Letitia Street (at the intersection of Letitia and Anne Street North), houses the Family Court branch of the Superior Court of Justice. This facility acts as a Unified Family Court, meaning it has comprehensive jurisdiction over all family law matters in the region, streamlining processes that were previously split between provincial and superior courts. It serves as the primary venue for resolving domestic legal issues for residents of Barrie and Simcoe County.
Services and Jurisdiction
The Family Court handles a wide spectrum of sensitive legal matters, including:
- Divorce and Separation: Adjudicating dissolution of marriage and the division of matrimonial property.
- Child Welfare: Handling decision-making responsibility (custody), parenting time (access), and child support. It also presides over child protection cases brought by the Children’s Aid Society.
- Enforcement: Working in conjunction with the Family Responsibility Office (FRO) to enforce support orders.
Resources for Litigants
The courthouse features a Family Law Information Centre (FLIC), providing free information and resources to individuals navigating the court system, particularly those representing themselves. Advice lawyers from Legal Aid Ontario may be available to provide summary legal advice to eligible low-income clients. The facility also encourages dispute resolution through mediation services, aiming to help parties reach agreements without a trial.
Facility Access
Visitors must pass through strict security screening upon entering the courthouse, which includes metal detectors and bag checks. Electronic devices such as cell phones are generally permitted but must be silenced and strictly managed according to courtroom protocol; photography is prohibited. The building is wheelchair accessible, with elevators and accessible washrooms available.
